Dear friends,

Welcome to the latest Cardiff Connect where we bring you the latest headlines from Cardiff, along with the new issue of our supporters magazine Diolch, a new photo platform for you to share your images with us on Instagram, an invitation to join us at our networking event in London on 20 June, and more.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of Cardiff University. Whether you have volunteered to give your time to mentor a student, donated to scholarships or research on campus, or simply told your friends what a great time you had here, we truly appreciate having your support. Thank you.

Directory of expertise

Latest developments

Cardiff is ranked in the top 200 universities in 20 subject areas as one of the world's elite universities.

Helping society

Recent research at Cardiff into antisocial behaviour identifies how to better protect victims, and a schools-based intervention programme has been successfully preventing smoking in teenagers. Cardiff academics are also offering specialist knowledge to the media through the new Directory of Expertise.

Research success

The University is welcoming five new £1m Marie Curie Fellowships; and has launched the autism hub and UK Catalysis Hub to investigate autism and environmental issues respectively.

Cardiff University research was recognised in the recent Innovation and Impact Awards. The MRC Centre is celebrating winning an international prize for schizophrenia research too.

Alumni stories

We posted this question on Facebook in early May, and it was great to see so many replies. We can now reveal the results of this informal poll:

    • The Woodville WINNER!
    • The Pen and Wig
    • The Buffalo
    • The End
    • The Blackweir Tavern
    • Roath Park

Even though The Woodville won this round, there were lots of fab memories of other places too.

It was also great to see a poster shared by alumnus Jonathan Gray with the Cardiff Heritage Pub Trail. You can see this online - and you might be surprised to see that almost all the pubs from the '80s are still going strong!

Diolch (thank you) to all our supporters

Diolch

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

I am delighted to welcome you to the latest issue of Diolch, the donor newsletter for supporters of Cardiff University.

Since I started my new role as President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University last September, it has been a great pleasure to meet many supporters of the University who are helping to make a difference to our work.

I’ve personally pledged my own support to the Cardiff Fund and I’m proud to be one of the growing number of donors to Cardiff University. All of us here are immensely grateful and are aware that philanthropic support is key to our future success.

Whether you are supporting our ground-breaking research, our talented scholars, or our excellent facilities, your investment is appreciated and with your help Cardiff University will become more sustainable and better able to respond to the challenges facing Higher Education in the 21st century.

I hope that this issue of Diolch illustrates some of the transformations that are taking place as a result of your philanthropy. Thank you very much for your continued support.

President and Vice-Chancellor, Cardiff University
