Changing Lives

Dr Jack Matthews Scholarship Fund

In April 2009 the School of Medicine along with Cardiff Medicals RFC launched a campaign to raise funds to provide scholarships, bursaries and prizes for medical students studying at Cardiff University.

The Dr Jack Matthews Scholarship Fund will help build a legacy for future generations and inspire medical students, helping them reach their full potential. The School of Medicine at Cardiff University has built an enviable reputation for excellence in teaching and research – work which continues to bring significant benefits to individuals, society and health worldwide.

Dr Jack Matthews OBE studied at Cardiff Medical School and practised as a GP in Cardiff for over 40 years. Dr Jack was an accomplished sportsman and played rugby union for Cardiff, the Barbarians, Wales and the British Lions.

A number of students have already benefited from donations made to this fund. The money allocated will help send the winners to remote parts of the world including Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Mongolia to support a variety of important medical projects. Other ways to help

A Bequest - As well as helping reduce your tax burden, providing for Cardiff University in your will is an effective way of providing lasting support for the University. Please contact the Alumni & Development Division for a copy of our Legacy brochure - Email: Donate@cardiff.ac.uk

Give as you Earn(UK Only) - Payroll giving allows for charitable donations to be made from your gross income, before tax has ben deducted. So each £1 you give will only cost you 78p, for higher rate tax payers it is only 60p. In most companies all you need to do is contact your payroll or human resources department and they will give you a payroll giving form to fill in and send to us.

Gifts of shares and securities - Donors who give shares can offset the full value of their gift against their liability for income tax for the tax year in which the gift is made. This is in addition to the exemption from capital gains tax on the disposal the shares.
